ELV, WEEE and RoHS Summary Outline

RoHS  (Restriction of Hazardous Substances 2002/95/EC)

  • Restricts the placing on the EU market of new electrical and electronic equipment containing  lead, cadmium, mercury, and hexavalent chromium
  • Also restricts the flame retardants polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE)
  • A few applications for these substances are exempted
  • July 1, 2006 is the directed effective date
  • RoHS is related to the WEEE Directive
  • RoHS Directive

WEEE (Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment 2002/96/EC)

  • Enacted to reduce the environmental impact of electrical and electronic equipment while in use and as waste
  • A wide range of products are covered
  • Encourages and sets criteria for the collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of WEEE
  • Makes OEMs responsible for financing most of these activities
  • Private parties are to be able to return WEEE without charge
  • WEEE Directive

ELV – (End of Life Vehicle 2000/53/EC)

  • Aims to reduce the environmental impacts of scrapping vehicles to landfills.
  • Also restricts hazardous materials used in new vehicles
